Marry me chicken became famous thanks to a TikTok video. Supposedly, this chicken breast recipe is so delicious that if you make it for someone, they are guaranteed to say yes to a marriage proposal.
Whether that is true exactly as stated, I do not know. What I do know is that it is delicious enough to have made our marriage even stronger. And what may also matter—once someone is no longer busy with all the tricky business of proposing—is that the kids like it enough to happily stay in the family. 😁
The Original Marry Me Chicken Recipe
Marry me chicken is one of those rare recipes where there really is an original recipe. It is also still available online today; see the link below the recipe. When I decided to make and publish it myself, my first thought was naturally—since this site is specifically about presenting the original versions of famous recipes—that I would cook it exactly as written, one to one.
Then came the encounter with reality. After reading the recipe, I had the stray thought that this could, in fact, be done better. Not by interfering too much, and not by changing the original concept or flavor profile in any essential way. But if, for example, marry me chicken is a saucy chicken breast recipe, then why not make it truly saucy, rather than only halfway there?
Yes, this is what happens when something becomes famous on TikTok or in a similar virtual reality. After all, something that looks good for half a minute on camera is not necessarily what is best for the taste buds. And that is without even mentioning that, unfortunately, you cannot always be sure that what the camera sees is the same thing as what is described in the recipe.
My Version
But instead of lamenting the quirks of our modern world, here is what I changed compared with the original marry me chicken recipe:
- I pushed the seasoning up a little, especially the garlic. This recipe needs it, and it can easily handle one and a half times the amount.
- I added finely chopped onion. This makes the sauce much thicker and fuller, and it also makes the flavors even more intense.
- I used more liquid. More stock and more cream went into it. On the one hand, this made it much saucier, which of course also makes it more delicious. On the other hand, because of the onion mentioned above, the texture still stayed perfect.
- Of course, I converted the recipe to metric—as people cook practically everywhere outside the United States. So I am not giving the ingredients here in cups and similar measures except where that makes sense, but in grams.
Why Is This Recipe So Delicious?
There is a very simple explanation for this. This recipe is simply an umami bomb. Among the ingredients, the sun-dried tomatoes, Parmesan, and stock are all textbook examples of how to bring out this so-called fifth taste from natural ingredients.
And if we add to that the creaminess and richness of the cream, which amplifies every flavor many times over—so it basically works as a kind of flavor enhancer on its own—then we understand that the marry me chicken recipe is practically a textbook list of umami, and it is guaranteed to send our taste buds straight to heaven.
Oh, and of course we should not forget to mention that the cream should really be cream—in today’s terms, heavy cream or whipping cream. Forget cooking cream; it is just watered-down cream, and the flavors will come through much less.
Oven or Stovetop?
The original marry me chicken is made in the oven. The chicken is browned in a skillet on the stovetop, the sauce is assembled there as well, but then the dish goes into the oven, and that is where it finishes cooking and where the chicken breast cooks through.
I made it this way too, and it turned out very delicious. But apart from the fact that this—the “put it in the oven” step—can look very cool and impressive in an American TikTok video, I do not see any culinary point to it. It does, however, make the recipe a little harder to prepare.
And let’s be realistic. More people will be able to make this chicken breast recipe for proposal purposes if they do not have to fuss with the oven and can simply throw it together on the stovetop. And that is exactly the case—you can make it on the stovetop instead of in the oven, with the chicken covered.
Cow’s-Milk-Free Version
Marry me chicken can also be made without cow’s milk. To do this, use plant-based cream instead of cream, and pecorino Romano instead of Parmesan. This way, it is not only lactose-free, but even if someone specifically cannot consume cow’s milk—there is such a diet too—they can still enjoy this recipe in this version.

Marry Me Chicken
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 chicken breasts filleted
- Ground black pepper
- Salt
- 2 oz onion, about 1 small onion 60 g
- 1 ½ cloves garlic
- 3 sprigs fresh thyme about 0.04 oz (1.2 g)
- ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes or 1/4 tsp paprika
- ½ cup chicken stock 120 ml
- 1.4 oz sun-dried tomatoes 40 g
- 6 Tbsp cream 90 ml, preferably heavy cream or whipping cream, not cooking cream
- 0.7 oz Parmesan 20 g
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Instructions
- To make marry me chicken, finely chop the onion, crush the garlic, and cut the sun-dried tomatoes into smaller pieces. Grate the cheese. Season the whole chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Preheat the oven to 340°F convection (170°C fan)—but the recipe can also be made on the stovetop; see below.

- In half of the oil, sear the whole chicken breasts first over very high heat, then over medium-high heat, for 3 minutes per side. Then set them aside on a plate.

- Add the remaining oil to the skillet and add the onion. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 2 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another half minute.
- Add the sun-dried tomatoes, crushed red pepper flakes or paprika, the stock, and the cream. Tear in the thyme leaves. Stir everything together and add the chicken breasts.

- Put the chicken in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes, until the inside reaches 167°F (75°C). Turn the chicken breasts twice while they cook. You can also make it on the stovetop, over low heat, covered, also for 20 minutes. In this case, turn the chicken breasts twice as well.

- Finally, add the grated cheese to the sauce and mix it in as much as you can. The chicken is already in the sauce, but the cheese will melt.

- Tear fresh basil leaves over the top and serve immediately.
